Award-winning show garden ‘A homecoming prayer’ arrives ‘home’ to Dishforth

The 6 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps memorial garden project took Gold and won Best in Show for 'A Homecoming Prayer' show garden at the recent Harrogate Spring Flower Show.

The Japanese-themed garden was sponsored by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and its registered Affiliate members, and project managed by Peter Cunliffe and his team at Northumbrian Landscaping.  Green-tech is proud to have been asked to be involved and donated the timber and compost.

‘A Homecoming Prayer’ was the largest ever show garden at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show and has now been relocated and recreated at the 6 Regiments’ base barracks at Dishforth Airfield, its final resting place; located just along the road from Green-tech’s head office in North Yorkshire.

The new memorial garden replaces their existing plot at the base barracks and intends to provide a relaxing haven, fit to serve the servicemen and women and their family and friends who reside at the barracks. It is intended to be a reflective space providing an oasis of peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a busy army barracks. The circular design and screening create isolation from the garden’s surroundings, while a central, cedar clad prayer house and seating area offer the perfect place for thought and meditation, surrounded by calming scents and the sound of rippling water. Using traditional methods based on the elements of light, sound and water, the garden features the natural materials of wood and stone. In keeping with Japanese traditions, planting focuses strongly on foliage and structure, with bamboo and grasses to create movement, and the addition of lavender to bring calm and attract wildlife.

The garden has been built on a 200sqm site with help from veterans from Help for Heroes as part of their recovery pathway, and servicemen from the 6th RLC - a massive achievement for all involved. The memorial garden includes a new Cenotaph area. It is hoped that the garden will not only enhance the barracks, but also kick start wider gardening initiatives.

The 6 Regiment Royal Logistic Corp Regiment formed in 1993 and has deployed on operations in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Cyprus. They have approximately 550 personnel from around 27 nations based at Dishforth, North Yorkshire. The regiment is responsible for delivering the right supplies to the right people at the right time, in times of war and peace, which means they have many members deployed around the globe at any one time.
