The UK’s First Tree Shelter Collection & Recycling Scheme is now live!

The UK’s First Tree Shelter Collection & Recycling Scheme is now live!

The Tree Shelter Collection and Recycling Programme is the first of its kind in the UK and is a cost-effective tree shelter recycling solution that ensures responsible disposal is within reach for everyone.

Green-tech has been vocal about their mission to reduce plastic in the landscape market. This has gathered momentum over the last 18 months and Sales Director Richard Gill comments, “We are under no illusion that plastic cannot be eradicated from our everyday lives, however, we believe our approach to plastic as an industry can change. We have been working closely with Tubex, the largest UK manufacturer of tree protection products, to find a recycling solution for tree shelters and tubes that have reached their end of life.”

This much-needed initiative provides a second-life for the plastics used in the manufacture of tree shelters and tubes. A recycling-scheme that is uncomplicated, simple to execute and an affordable offering to the landscape market.

Richard continues, “We are proud to be working in partnership with Tubex to deliver this scheme. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make this project simple to execute, easy to manage and most importantly affordable to use.”

The industry has been demanding a scheme like this for many years. The initiative is now live but Tubex and Green-tech expect it to really take off during the months of April to September, outside of the main planting season. It’s a simple initiative that closes the loop on this particular plastic solution

James Taylor, Marketing & Product Development Director from Berry adds, “As part of the Berry Global family and the UK’s leading tree shelter manufacture Tubex has received increasing requests over the past months for a viable and cost-effective tree shelter recycling solution that will benefit the end-user, contractor and the environment. We are delighted that Green-tech has stepped forward to work in partnership with us. Our collection and recycling programme will be available for all Tubex products. We will be running this as a not-for-profit scheme; we will simply be charging enough to cover costs”

Plastic waste affects our everyday life and this new initiative closes the loop to ensure responsible disposal of tree shelters is within reach for everyone. It is straight-forward to access and use. The steps are as follows:

  1. When Tubex products are ready for removal from trees or shrubs, place an order for bulk recycling sacks with Green-tech. As a guide, if well stacked, approximately 350 to 400 Tubex Standard Shelters (1.2m) will fill a bulk recycling sack.
  1. Fill the bulk bags with the removed Tubex tree shelters.
  1. Once full the bags will be collected and transported to the Tubex recycling plant.
  1. At the recycling plant, they are washed and recycled into PP pellets.
  1. The recycled PP pellets will then have a ‘second-life’ incorporated into other Berry Global products, including Tubex.
